Kenyan mobile supplier Mi-Fone is the latest company to have a go at cashing in on Brand Obama, launching this curious Barack Obama themed mobile phone in the region. The Mi-Obama phone will help Mi-Fone “forge new frontiers in African urban youth market,” apparently, although unlike the man whose slogan the phone carries, the low-spec handset is unlikely to change the world for the better and have people sobbing with joy.
It’s a generic dual-band GSM piece, and you know there’s nothing to get excited about when one of the bullet points on the list of features is “calculator”. It does at least have a built-in little LED torch. That’s a handy addition, so much better than trying to find whatever it is you’ve just dropped by using the light of the screen.
Photos of a new mid-range Samsung S3500 leaked online. The stylish slider has a relatively modest specs sheet and will most probably rely on design and attractive pricing to lure some potential customers.
Samsung S3500 has a styling quite similar to the highly successful U900 Soul. Functionality-wise however it stands a couple of levels lower than the company's upper midrange flagship.
The S3500 sports quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE connectivity as well as Bluetooth and USB. The handset will sport a 262K color QVGA display of yet unknown size. It also has 35 MB of internal memory, expandable through the microSD card slot.
There is yet no information about the availably or the pricing of the handset but with MWC 2009 due in a couple of weeks we might just get to see it in person.
The feature-rich specs sheet of the Nokia 6700 classic will serve you with stuff such as a 5 megapixel autofocus camera, GPS navigation with Nokia Maps and the awesome Nokia WebKit Open Source Browser, previously available only on the Symbian S60 smartphones.
Nokia 6700 classic
At only 11mm of thickness, the Nokia 6700 sports a full metal keymat, a 2.2-inch 16M color QVGA display and supports both quad-band GSM and tri-band UMTS networks (plus HSDPA up to 10 Mbps).
The Nokia 6700 classic also has a built-in accelerometer for tap-for-clock and turn-to-mute features, which we first saw in the Nokia Arte lineup.
Unfortunately, video recording with 6700c maxes out at VGA@15fps (or CIF@30fps) and there doesn't seem to be Wi-Fi connectivity or even a document viewer, which were both available on the Nokia 6260 slide.
Nokia 6700 classic: Silver metallic, Matte metallic, Black metallic, Brown metallic
Much like the 6260 slide however, there will be Flash Light 3 support, which should allow watching Flash video on the go. The Windows Live messenger will also come preinstalled on the device.
The Nokia 6700 will ship with 1GB microSD card in Silver metallic, Matte metallic, Black metallic, and Brown metallic colors at an estimated retail price of 235 euro in Q3 2009.

The Motorola ZN300 climbs above the low end Motorola ZN200, which was announced last summer.
The ZN300 is expected to offer a 3-megapixel camera, QVGA display and preinstalled Opera Mini mobile browser. No word on other specs yet, but what you can easily spot on the image is some sort of a morphing D-pad area (typical Motorola), which changes in accordance to the current application.
We hope to see the ZN300 announced at the MWC 2009 (16-20 February).
The Samsung B2100 looks very similar to the Samsung B2700, except that this time it is even tougher. It bears the IP57 certification which is just as good as the Sonim XP3 Enduro. This means that the handset is fully waterproof (up to 30 minutes in up to 1 m depth) as well as completely dust and sand resistant.
In terms of features the B2100 is hardly a great hit but the ones that need a phone so tough are rarely tech-freaks anyway. The handset packs tri-band (900/1800/1900 MHz) GSM support, a 1.77" display with a resolution of 120 x 160 pixels and a 1.3 MP camera.
The fragile 3G video camera is now absent along with the UMTS support, but at least EDGE support is provided so network data transfers shouldn't be completely ruled out.
Some of the other B2700 features gone missing are the digital compass and altimeter.
Samsung B2100
Samsung B2100 also sports Bluetooth and USB connectivity as well as a microSD card slot for expanding the built-in memory of 10MB.
The handset is expected to hit the shelves in March in three color versions (black, green and red) with an estimated retail price of only 90 euro (120 US dollars). Sounds quite a deal for an indestructible phone, right? We can't wait to get one for a spin... (in the washing machine).
In fact, Nokia is lording it over everyone with a 69 per cent share and Motorola holds 20 per cent of the growing sector.
Both of these foreign companies are beating the likes of the Asia-native HTC, Samsung and LG.
Bad news for Android?
The reports come from TelecomTiger, which also states that S60 is by far the dominant platform, holding nearly three quarters of the market. It seems like bad news for Android, because it barely registers on the sales charts. However, given there's only one phone on the market, it's too early to cast aspersions on the system.
Revenues and sales also increased in the last year in the region, so at least China is still up for phoning people on fancy handsets.
The news will be welcome for ailing manufacturer Motorola, as it faces a make or break year with a slew of new products ready to hit the market.
But if you're making 2010 predictions, it's probably best to factor in the minimal influence the iPhone currently has in Asia, given the lack of an official carrier for so long. Come the end of the year, we could be seeing a much more Apple-i-fied picture if Mr Jobs (or his stand-in) have anything to do with it....
This one comes straight from the horse’s mouth, folks. A new blog update on their Firefox Mobile (codename: Fennec) development wiki has announced that Mozilla is aiming to go live with a Milestone release of Firefox Mobile in the first week of February. Better yet, the Fennec team is working to run the new mobile browser on the HTC Touch Pro.
Fennec has already hit Alpha 2 status, so it’s not too surprising to see Mozilla’s Firefox Mobile team gearing up for their first huge milestone next week. And, as WMExperts notes, all eyes will be on the enterprising group of Windows Mobile developers at xda-developers to port the first Firefox Mobile beta to various HTC hardware. Firefox Mobile’s arrival as a Windows Mobile beta will likely spark the mobile browser’s penetration into the WinMo underground.
The world is poised to welcome yet another capable mobile browser into the mix. Stay tuned for the latest updates on Firefox Mobile (Fennec) development!
This enormous picture, taken by David Bergman, was stitched together from 220 images taken on a Canon G10 mounted on a Gigapan panoramic imager system.
I think it turned out extremely well (check out the full-screen), owing in no small part to the photographer’s skill, of course, but also the bright, flat light that illuminated the whole scene equally and shadowlessly.
Obviously what most people will do is zoom in on Obama, but if you’re looking to count the hairs on his head you’ll be disappointed; with a wide-angle lens at that distance, you get detail but not detail; fortunately plain ol’ detail is quite good enough for discerning all the other interesting things in the picture. And considering it’s a picture of probably 50,000 people viewable in close-up, can you find:
There’s lots of good stuff. You can’t download the whole thing, though, due to it being waaay too big.
The all time gripping war game Call of Duty 4 is being developed by mobile game publishers Glu Mobile Inc. Glu Mobile are collaborating with video game publishers Activision Inc to develop a mobile phone version of Call of Duty 4.
With mobile phone games being download at even a faster and more popular rate mobile phones need to have all the latest games available and if this means all the top selling console games are popular then it needs to be put on mobile phones, and it seems top mobile game publishers are giving us what we need. Game on.
The new Nokia E75 has already leaked in the past. It packs a dual keyboard layout - a full QWERTY thumbboard plus an alpha-numeric keypad.
Nokia E75 also features a 3.2 megapixel snapper with LED flash, 2.4-inch display, Wi-Fi and HSDPA capabilities. The OS of course is the latest Symbian S60. That's all we know. You can enjoy the high quality photos.
Nokia E75
There is interesting resemblance with the leaked Nokia 5730 XpressMusic. The QWERTY keyboard is exactly the same. If E75 also has GPS and a 3.5mm audio jack on board, we may not tell the difference.
Summing up the leaks, Nokia have at least three unannounced phones in the works that were already spotted by the public - Nokia E75, Nokia 5730 XpresssMusic, and Nokia 5710 XpressMusic. Most probably they will become official at the MWC in February. Until then we can only stare at the pictures and guess what the Finns are preparing for us.
