Touch Pro CDMA clears the FCC

We've long known it was coming to Sprint, and just today we told you Verizon was getting in on the action as well, but until now the Touch Pro CDMA hadn't actually been made official. The FCC has taken care of that for us; the Diamond's sliding sibling has just passed through their testing. Sprint is usually decent about getting their phones out in a reasonable time, so that rumored September date looks good for now. We'd expect Alltel won't sit on their hands either, though at this point that's purely conjecture based off their past offerings. Let's hope Verizon doesn't follow their recent trend of launching non-RIM smartphones months later then their rivals.

BlueRadar 1.20 for 3rd edition

Lost your partner in the shopping center and he/she does not hear you are calling him/her?
Overlooked someone you are waiting for in the airport or in the club passing by?
Late to your classes and cannot find the classroom without knocking at every door?

Want to be warned when your boss is approaching your workplace?
Or, would you like to play the old “hide and seek” in a new exciting way? (E.g. identify an unknown person whose mobile phone you can detect?)

This is where BlueRadar can help you.
BlueRadar quickly detects a bluetooth device even if the device is not in the discoverable (public) mode and notifies you when it is near.

It is just enough if the mobile phone or other device belonging to the person you want to trace has bluetooth switched on.

New devices can be added to the known device list in two ways:

* using bluetooth discovery - the same way which is used for pairing devices (the device must be in the discoverable mode for a while)

* or, manually - by entering the device bluetooth ID
Bluetooth ID can be easily obtained for Nokia phones by pressing *#2820# (as if typing phone number to dial).

Important: If you get the following error message during installation:

“Certificate Error contact the application supplier”

Opera Mobile 9.5 to be available July 15th

Today, Opera announced that “the wait is (almost) over” and that the first public beta of its new mobile browser will be released July 15th. Opera Mobile 9.5 is based on the same Presto rendering engine used in the desktop variant and is an excellent browser, as we’ve seen in both the HTC Touch Diamond and the Advantage X7510, which ship with a personalized variant.

The new version is optimized not for a specific device, but for any Windows Mobile Professional or Symbian UIQ phone and will have “a few differences”. Probably it will have new interface but we expect it will offer similar user experience – Excellent.

Nokia unveils the Supernova line

Nokia just announced the existence of its Supernova line, which was first noticed in the beginning of this month. The first four devices feature a mix of “bold” colors and exchangeable covers, in order to attract as many customers as possible. They are expected to hit the European market later this year.

Nokia 7610 Supernova is a slider that not only comes in four colors (blue or red plus gray; lilac or blue plus white) but the user can also set the wallpaper and key illumination to “any” color (Nokia 7900 Prism offered 49 colors so we guess this is also the situation for the 7610).

It features a 3.2-megapixel camera with dual-LED flash, dedicated music key, player, FM radio and TV out. Expect it in the third quarter at a price of EUR 225 ($355)

Nokia 7510 Supernova is a clamshell but in order to be opened easily with one hand, it has auto-opening mechanism activated by a side key. Its color variants are in blue, red, green, and espresso brown. Features include 2MP camera, 2.2-inch QVGA display, MP3 player and FM radio and a new “user friendly” web browser. As the previous one found in S40 phones was far from good, we hope this one will be able to compete with what Sony Ericsson offers in its phones (for example the G502). 7510 will launch in Q3 at a price of about EUR 180 ($280).

The 7310 Supernova is a candybar, available in steel blue plus additional front and back cover in either wasabi green or pink. Additionally, five other color faceplates will be available for purchase. It features 2-megapixel camera, MP3 player and FM radio. According to Nokia, it “is available in the second quarter of 2008”, which ends in three days, so it is the first to hit the shelves. Price is approximately EUR 155 ($245).

Last is the other candybar, the 7210 Supernova, which is the simplest and most affordable of all. It will be available in either bubble gum pink or blue variant, in the third quarter of the year for EUR 120 ($190). It also features 2MP camera and music player with expandable memory.

T-Mobile to offer Motorola ROKR E8

T-Mobile USA now lists the Motorola ROKR E8 as “coming soon” and it is expected to launch it on Monday, June 30th, at a price of $200 after two-year contract. This has been anticipated since mid-Feb when a photo of the E8 with the carrier branding leaked.

The ROKR E8 is Motorola’s high-class music-centric phone; it is a slim candybar with landscape display and “morphing” keypad, which visualizes different buttons depending on the menu you are in (in the music player, it shows controls instead of numeric keys).

Use Your Phone As a Flash Disk - SymSMB v1.0

SymSMB 1.10 allows sharing Smartphone’s folders and drives, which can be accessed over Wi-Fi from the PC. With a computer and Wi-Fi router one can access files on the Smartphone as if it’s connected to the computer via cable in file transfer mode
Copy files to and from the Smartphone, create and rename its existing files and directories, listen to your favourite tunes or to watch cool videos on your PC directly from the phone – all the necessary features. Here are some of application’s benefits over cable connection, Bluetooth and IrDA

Program Features;

* No need to install any additional PC software (like PC Suite), drivers and such

* Access to all 4 Smartphone drives: C: (phone memory), D: (RAM), Z: (ROM), E: (Memory Card). In comparison, “USB Mass Storage” mode only provides access to E: (Memory Card), while PC Suite – to C and E, although in the limited user way.

* Phone connected using SymSMB 1.10 is still fully functional (incoming and outgoing calls, use of other applications, etc.)

* Smartphone files can be accessed not just from one, but from several computers. This is, by the way, the method to copy files from one phone to another.

Sprint Touch gets WinMo 6.1, too

Sprint's just churning out Windows Mobile 6.1 as fast as they can it seems. Yesterday we saw a new Mogul ROM surface, and today the Touch gets the same update. Users are reporting a quicker GPS fix and overall improved stability over previous custom ROMs. Since this is an official Sprint ROM there is no need to unlock your device or worry about bricking it, but it also means it will only work on Sprint devices. Head over to XDA, download the .exe, connect your device and run it!

Nokia aquires Symbian, will open it up

Nokia, previously a 48% owner in Symbian, has purchased the remaining stake for $411M with the intention of creating an open-sourced platform based off the merger of their S60 platform and the Symbian OS. No doubt feeling the pressure of Google's Open Handset Alliance and the Linux LiMo Foundation, the Symbian Foundation has been created and includes partners such as AT&T, Vodafone, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, LG, Motorola, T-Mobile and others. Symbian currently runs on two thirds of the world's smartphones, but open platforms such as Android pose a real threat to market dominance. By unifying and opening the platform Nokia hopes to spur development and time to market for new features.

Samsung J800 Luxe, L700 and L870 caught live

Samsung revealed some spanking new mobiles at the Singapore Telecommunications Exhibition - the Samsung J800 Luxe and Samsung L700. They also showcased the Samsung L870.

Samsung J800 Luxe

Samsung J800 Luxe name sounds a bit misleading as there is nothing luxurious about the handset. The Samsung J800 Luxe is a mid-range slider with the reasonable thickness of 15mm and a 2.2-inch 256K TFT display with the meager resolution of 176 x 220 pixels.

Samsung J800 sports a 2 megapixel camera, lacking autofocus but the phone features photo blog function, which allows direct image upload to blogs (over the 3G connection).
Other multimedia features include music and video player, FM radio with RDS, and stereo Bluetooth (A2DP). The slot for microSD cards compensates the scarce 18MB built-in memory.

The built-in office document viewer, HTML browser, POP3/IMAP4 mail client, RSS reader and Mobile Tracker complete the set of functions of Samsung J800. The tri-band phone also relies on the HSDPA (2100 MHz) for fast data transfers.

The pricing and availability of the Samsung J800 is still a guessing game.

Samsung L700

The Samsung L700 is the second new midrange handset presented in Singapore. The L700 comes in the monoblock form factor and is relatively thin, measuring only 12.8mm at the waistlne. The quad-band L700 also offers HSDPA support.

Sadly, this phone has an average 2.1-inch 256K TFT display with the mere resolution of 128 x 160 pixels. The 2 megapixel camera without autofocus is the other downside of the phone.
The multimedia section features the traditional Samsung music/video player, FM radio with RDS and again stereo Bluetooth. The built-in memory of 30MB can be further expanded with microSD cards.

As in J800 Luxe, the Samsung L700 also has a POP3/IMAP4 email client, HTML browser and an office document viewer.

The Samsung L700 will be released in silver, pink, and gold variations but there is no word on the pricing and the availability of the phone.

Samsung L870

The Samsung L870 was initially announced on May 28th. Despite its rather Soul-like looks, the L870 does not belong to the Soul lineup.

Samsung L870 is powered by the same Symbian OS and user interface as all Nokia N-series smartphones. This pup is only 13.5mm in thickness and has a 3 megapixel autofocus camera and a 2.4-inch 16M color TFT display with QVGA resolution.

The Samsung L870 has tri-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support plus HSDPA 3.6Mbps for fast wireless data transfers. Speaking of wireless, the only thing that let us down in the L870 specs sheet is the lack of Wi-Fi functionality.

The Samsung L870 will also host FM radio and Bluetooth and USB connectivity. The internal memory is 100MB and the memory card slot can take a microSD card with a capacity of up to 4GB.

The Samsung L870 will be available in Europe this August 2008 - that will be a fast one. Pricing is yet unknown however.

Nokia N78 released in the US

The N78 has made its way to US shores, and there's a whole lot to love about this smartphone. Features are aplenty, with North American HSDPA, Wi-Fi, A-GPS, a 3.2 megapixel camera with Carl Ziess optics and automatic geotagging, microSDHC expansion and a touch-sensitive keyboard. The device can be had at select retailers, including the Nokia flagship stores in NYC and Chicago, for $560.

Another Motorola ZN5 review pops up

A lot of people got their hands on the Motorola ZN5 long before it was announced but those were all beta handsets that might have had a few issues now and then. Now that the 5 megapixel shooter was officially unveiled the real life performance of the handset deserves more attention.

The guys at ePrice who attended the Motorola ZN5 announcement event, managed to get their hands on one of the units for a quick preview. In addition to their first impressions of the ergonomics of the device they have also published a bunch of screenshots and some sample photos from the 5 megapixel camera.

The news coming from the preview concerns the availability of the ZN5. The handset is expected to hit the Taiwanese market in September, retailing at 320 euro (510 US dollars). It's expected later on on other markets.

However it doesn't get clear if the final version of ZN5 will feature image capturing in RAW mode. The beta units of the handset that leaked earlier all used to have it but user reports have been coming in since the official announcement stating the opposite.

Here is a quick selection of photos from the review for you to enjoy.
Here are also a few camera sample photos:

Motorola quietly releases MING A1600 and MING A1800

Motorola announced two more smartphones today without any bells and whistles. The MOTOMING A1600 and MOTOMING A1800 are two powerful business devices armed with Linux, GPS, touchscreen and a bunch of other goodies.

We have posted about these devices before while they were still in their rumors stage, but now it's as official as it gets.
Motorola MING A1600

The Motorola MING A1600 flaunts a 2.4-inch 262K color TFT display with a QVGA resolution. It's touchscreen and there is also a stylus to help you get around. The signature MING semi-transparent plastic active cover protects the display and aids in call management.
A Motorola MING A1600 runs on the Linux OS, much like the predecessor MING A1200. The A1600 has got quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support and no 3G functionality - a clear sign it's been mainly targeted at the Chinese market.

A 3 megapixel camera with continuous autofocus makes the A1600 the first to offer that feature on a mobile phone. The camera also is able to shoot a burst of images in GIF format and then save them all in one single animated GIF - that sounds so 90s. A business card scanner application also puts the camera to good use. A unique scanning translation feature allows you to shoot a sign or some text and then have it translated by the on-board dictionary.

The Motorola A1600 also packs a microSD card slot (up to 4GB), stereo Bluetooth (A2DP), a microUSB port, and a stereo FM radio. Unfortunately, there's no Wi-Fi connectivity as it was rumored.

Thanks to the built-in GPS receiver users can also enjoy real-time GPS navigation as well as geotagging of the photos taken by the 3 megapixel camera.

Measuring 98.9 x 53.5 x 19.6mm and weighing 128g, the Motorola MING A1600 is certainly not among the most compact devices.

Unfortunately, we don't have any information regarding pricing and availability plans.

The Motorola MING A1800 is almost a twin of the A1600 - they share the 2.4-inch QVGA touchscreen display, the 3 megapixel camera, the microSD memory card slot (up to 4GB), and the stereo Bluetooth (A2DP), and finally… the built-in GPS and the Linux OS. There's no Wi-Fi support again.
The MOTOMING A1800 however packs two radio transceivers - that means it offers simultaneous connection to two networks. But there's even more to that - the A1800 can hook up to both GSM and CDMA networks. The GSM support covers tri-band GSM and GPRS (no EDGE or 3G), while the CDMA support covers the CDMA 1x standard.

That makes the A1800 a really interesting cross-breed, but you can bet that we won't be seeing any of it over here in Europe, where CDMA is hardly to be found.

As you might have guessed it, there's no info on the A1800 availability and pricing.

T-Mobile launches Nokia 6301 and Samsung T339

Today, T-Mobile USA announced two new phones for its HotSpot @Home, the service that allows for unlimited nationwide calling when using a WiFi network. Both phones are now available for purchase online and at select T-Mobile retail stores.

Nokia 6301 is the UMA-capable variant of the 6300, which is very popular in Europe. It is a slim candybar with stylish design and metal body, which makes it look as a higher-class device. 6301 features 2-inch QVGA display, 2-megapixel camera, microSD slot, Stereo Bluetooth and FM radio.

You can also check Nokia 6300 Review here.

Samsung SGH-T339 is a very basic phone in clamshell form factor. It has a 176x220 pixels main display, 1.3-megapixel camera, microSD slot and Stereo Bluetooth.

Motorola ZINE ZN5 now official

Today, Motorola and Kodak announced their first joint phone, the MOTOZINE ZN5. This is the first 5-megapixel cameraphone of the U.S. manufacturer, coming years after the competition has released its models. The ZN5 is touted for its fast speeds (start and between pictures), the Xenon flash and “KODAK Imaging Technology with optimized settings for low-light environments”. The phone will also have fast access to KODAK online gallery or other web sharing sites for transferring the pictures online.

As a phone, the ZINE ZN5 can work worldwide, since it is a quad-band GSM/EDGE. It lacks 3G support, but has WiFi, to be used as a data source for the full HTML browser.

Motorola MOTOZINE ZN5 will be first available in China, beginning next month, and is expected to launch in the rest of the world later this year.

Game SWAT: Elite Troops for mobiles (Java)

We’d love to be a member of a SWAT team. Not because we like guns and rescuing hostages or anything, but because at least we’d be guaranteed to have something interesting to talk about after work. Which isn’t always the case when you’ve spent your entire day at a desk and the only person you’ve spoken to in the last eight hours is the postman when he had a delivery for you to sign for.

If you were a SWAT officer, you’d be abseiling down the sides of buildings, lobbing grenades into rooms full of terrorists and getting to retreat behind a big bulletproof riot shield when things got a bit hairy. No wonder there are so many games about SWAT units compared with those about office workers.

SWAT Elite Troops is a game that plays much as you might expect for a cop game. You take control of one officer and a further two follow you everywhere you go, acting as backup and scouting ahead if you tell them to. You’re armed with a pistol (and later on a few beefier weapons), grenades, a shield and various other gadgets and each of the game’s 15 levels gives you objectives to rescue hostages, kill terrorists and hack computers.
So far so generic, but this is actually a very good game. Not least because all of these basic mechanics of running, gunning and rescuing are seamlessly integrated. There are also plenty of little additional elements and mini-games which are expertly suited to mobile play. Such as bombs that need diffusing by identifying and cutting the correct wires against a timer, and hostage situations that need to be approached through a ventilation shaft instead of just charging through the door.

SWAT Elite Troops is nicely done because it’s simple enough to work on a phone, but plenty of thought has gone into making it a more comprehensive, tense experience, too.

Each level in the game uses the same basic rules. You begin in an area of the map and need to move through doors and explore areas to find and fulfil your objectives, all the while taking down any bad guy who is silly enough to cross your path. Although the viewpoint is isometric, allowing you in principle to see over walls and into rooms, areas remain blacked out until you’ve entered them. And because there could be an ambush or hostage situation lurking on the other side of every door, you need to approach opening each one carefully.

Using the optic cable shines a little light on what’s on the other side. Or you can blow open doors giving you the element of surprise, throw in a flash grenade first or simply get out your riot shield and go wading in. Gunning down enemies is simple but efficient. A red crosshair locks onto the nearest enemy, then fluctuates from large to small. Pressing fire when it’s at its smallest pulls off a headshot, while doing it when it’s bigger will mean more shots and the opportunity for your enemy to get in a few shots or a grenade of his own.

It’s genuinely difficult to get from the start to the end of a level without putting some tactical thought into how you’re going to approach each situation. Your health is whittled down quite quickly and only seeking out the few first aid kits in each level will save you – each element makes for a tense and strategic experience.

Losing health can feel a bit random, mainly because you can’t properly tell when you’re taking fire. You just need to assume that as long as you’re in the open with an enemy still standing you’ll take some shots. Also, there isn’t too much more of a challenge offered by the harder difficulty modes, so when you’ve finished the game within a few hours, there’s not that much replay value.

These little problems aside, SWAT Elite Troops is remarkably well formed and designed. It packs in plenty of ambitious special officer action while making everything very intuitive and fluid. It’s maybe not quite as exhilarating as the real-life job, but it’s one of the better mobile games that replicates it.

To encrypt/decrypt any file on your device use built-in “File Browser”. To access the file browser select “File Browser” command in menu. It’s easy to work with, just select any files (multiselection is allowed) and use encrypt or decrypt command in menu.
Session options

For every file you encrypt you may assign different password. But we understand that in some situation users would like to use the same password to encrypt/decrypt several files. If so, select “Keep key” option in “Session options” menu. While the application is running it’ll be typing last entered password automatically when you encrypt or decrypt files. So if you using the same password for all files you need to type it only once. After you close the application this password is reset and you will need to type it again when you start the application again. If you do not need this option select “Don’t keep key” option.

Please note: your password is not stored anywhere inside the application, encrypted files or in some place on your device in order to increase the safety. Password verification is performed by checking digital signs (digital signs say nothing about your password or encrypted data nature). It means that no person (including the application developers) can open and see your data without specifying correct password. Please don’t forget your password as there’s no way to access your data without it!

Sony Ericsson P5 and G702 (Beibei) are cancelled, for real

Seems like there is some sad news for Sony Ericsson fans - the two rumored Sony Ericsson smartphones have been cancelled.
